In connection with the opening of the 48th annual convention of the American First Day Cover Society, another Purple Heart Stamp was issued on August 1, 2003 in Somerset NJ.

Even though this was a reissue the USPS gave a full ceremony with an official program. This was a surprise and delight to all in attendance as the issue was only announced a few weeks prior.

The ceremony was opened by Anthony Fanelli, the Postmaster of Somerset NJ. Following the National Anthem, AFDCS President Thomas Foust dedicated the show to all Purple Heart recipients. Steven Ripley, AFDCS show chairman than thanked all those of the Armed Forces for their services to the country. ACPS President Jay Bigalke then told everyone how he secured a Trans-Mississippi press sheet in 1998 from a veteran of World War 2. ASPPP President Ron Walenciak then thanked all in attendance and stated it was an honor to be with recipients of the Purple Heart.

Purple Heart Recipient Richard L. Spinelli, former National Commander Military Order of the Purple Heart welcomed everyone and introduced Purple Heart Recipients in

attendance. It was then stated the day is looked forward to when the lack of conflict in the world will cause no more Purple Hearts to be given and no more Gold Star Mothers to be recognized.

A musical memorial on the bagpipes was then performed by Timmy McCabe, a NY/NJ Port Authority Police Officer. The audience was very moved by his performance.

Vito J. Cetta, District Manager of the Central NJ Performance Cluster then dedicated the new Purple Heart Stamp and asked everyone to remember all servicemen and women when using the stamp. He also reminded everyone of the new stamp honoring the Korean War. He referred to it as the forgotten war.

Presentation frames were then presented to ceremony participants including Richard Spinelli. He was thanked by all for his services to the country.

This concluded the ceremony and the 42nd Infantry removed the colors. Following official photos, participants remained to autograph programs.
